A morning of movement and tea
The session begins with quiet arrival at a light-filled studio in Saint Petersburg’s historic centre. As participants settle onto their mats, Mei Yang — Senior Tea Expert and host for the morning — pours a welcoming cup of a lightly oxidised Tieguanyin. The gentle floral notes and subtle minerality prepare the senses without overstimulating; it is a moment to arrive fully in the space.
The yoga practice unfolds as a 45-minute vinyasa sequence led by a local instructor. The flow links breath to movement — sun salutations that warm the spine, standing poses that build steadiness, and gradual opening of the hips and shoulders. The pace is steady, not rushed, with attention given to each transition.
Midway through, the rhythm pauses. Mats are rearranged into a circle and Mei Yang begins a gongfu tea service, using a Phoenix Mountain Mí Lán Xiāng (蜜兰香) oolong. The tea’s honey-orchid fragrance fills the room. As she pours small cups, Mei shares the story of the tea — its origin in spring-picked leaves, the patient roasting, and the way its energy mirrors the balance between effort and ease in asana practice. The word sattvic comes to mind: light, clear, awake. Each sip offers a moment of stillness before the body returns to motion.
The remainder of the practice shifts into a slower, restorative flow. Seated forward folds, gentle twists, and supported bridge poses allow the tea’s warmth to settle. The session concludes with a long śavāsana, deeply restful after the earlier exertion.
When students rise, Mei Yang invites them to a tea circle. More Mí Lán Xiāng is poured alongside a light plant-based snack. There is time for journaling, for asking questions about tea and practice, and for lingering in the morning’s quiet energy. Before leaving, each participant receives a small pouch of the featured oolong — a continuation of the ritual at home.
Throughout the morning, the studio holds only twelve mats. This intentional smallness encourages a deeper connection between practice, tea, and the people sharing the space. Members of tea.community can register at a preferred rate, and the same oolong selection is available for further exploration at shop.puerh.app — where the teas used in our events often live year-round. If you are curious about pairing tea with movement, this experience offers a gentle, considered entry point.
